How to Finance an Independent Film
Creative people need an outlet, and for
filmmakers that outlet is making independent films. For every major
motion picture released by a big name studio, there are hundreds of
independent films made by people you may have never heard of. Every
filmmaker wants to make a profit on their movies, but for the
independent filmmaker a good movie is more important than a
profit.
The most common way for an independent filmmaker to get financing are not to

for a movie is to max out their credit cards, drain their life
savings, and borrow from friends and family. If the movie fails to
make a profit, then the filmmaker is financially ruined. But there
are other ways to get financing for a movie that do not involve
ruining friendships and maxing out high interest credit
cards.
A creative way to finance an independent movie is to break the
financial needs of the movie up into shares, and then offer those
shares for sale to potential investors. For example, a film that
requires a million dollars in financing could be broken up into 100
shares at $10,000 each. Selling 100 shares of an independent movie
may be difficult, but at $10,000 each it may be possible to find
some takers.
Major movie studios have opened up to the idea that there is a
great deal of talent making independent movies, and they have
created funds to help get the better independent movies made.
Contact a major motion picture studio and ask if the help to
